Letter from Earl's Mother (Ruth Crockett) - 1929

Preston Idaho
21 Aug 1929

Our Dear Children Earl Della and Joy

It is now 15 after 2 P.M. dinner is over, father is a sleep, and I shall answer your welcome letter Earl which arrived Sun. 18 Aug.  We were pleased as ever to hear from you.

You letter was very interesting telling of your little trip and describing of Monterey, etc. We love to read of your trips and have you describe new scenes and places.  At present we are fairly well.

No Ed Nuffer is not married. He is to be married next Oct. to Jennie Smart. She lives down on the place where Uncle Charley lived when in Preston. They tell me she is a very nice girl.

Did I tell you when I see Ed, it is next to seeing my dear Earl?  It surly is.  I first feast my eyes on his dear smiling face his form too is like yours. Mary tells me it is the same with her he always reminds her of you and he is first like you in every way she said "saving, good and steady, kind, never gets excited."  I sure love that boy because he is wonderful like my dear Earl.  This is all true Earl so you can stand it I guess especially from your dear old Mother, who loves you so much.

We were so pleased to learn you will be able to teach part of the time in the University and be making your expenses. That is sure fine. We sure congratulate you. No you had not told us Della had been put in as first counselor to the Pres. of the Y.L.M.I.A. this year. That is fine Della. We congratulate you. I am sure you will enjoy your work.

We surly enjoy being in the large house it is much cooler and lots of room, and quiet. Yes all our children were here except George and youself and families but not at one time. Yes, Clyde was on his vacation. He is awful thin and white he had been working hard over time too. I think the work is too hard for him. He would be better off working in the open air.

Your Uncle Will is about the same, they said he may linger for months. His Frank has returned from his mission. Uncle Will has had four strokes. Mary and family will leave for Portland Ore. next Monday. Luther is now in Downey helping Ray Hurst build his house on his farm. Mary and children were up there at Luciles last week and came back yesterday. They are down to Nuffers today drying corn.

Earl did you know or remember Brother Hyrum Workman? Last Thurs. he was around as usual with his work, went to the Barbers, got shaved, went home, took a bath, went to bed feeling as usual. His wife went about half hour later, he raised up and kissed her and she noticed he first seemed to drop wilted like at her side. She arose turned on the light and he was dead. It was sure a shock to her and every one. He had heart trouble. We attended his funeral service last Sun. 2 P.M.  Two years ago he was in the Health Belt Clinic he used to call on your father some times about the business.

We wish you success Earl your New Year of school. I suppose you started last Monday. Father is awake now, he says how much will you get for teaching?  Or don't you know yet. We got a wedding card from Jennie and Maurice Mon. 19 Aug. They had been married first one month. Did you get one.  Ruth hasn't got one yet, Lucile has.

Father and I send love to you all.  Kiss Joy for us.  Write us when you can.  We remain as ever

Your loving parents.
